Anyone who has ever worked in journalism for several decades, such as myself, can attest to this. Whether you’re sifting through legal documents or financial statements, there’s more often than not a story — or at the very least some important information that can be used as supporting material — that can be gleaned from such an exercise.

The late Matthew Perry once prayed to become famous. Years later, he prayed to God “for the right thing: help.” Pray for the repose of his soul...
Actor Matthew Perry's surprising prayer to know GodLOPEZ: “God, please help me,” Matthew Perry whispered. “Show me that you are here. God, please help me.” In his memoir, the late actor described an encounter where he unmistakably knew God’s presence. He had been struggling with addiction. He even thought he was dying. But the peace that he received when he cried out to God “with the desperation of a drowning man” — which would ultimately be how he would die — was something he would go back to, to stay sober, and to remember the truth of God, the truth of more.

7 History Books That Help Explain The Israel-Hamas War
7 History Books That Help Explain The Israel-Hamas WarLISI: The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas is rooted in decades of mistrust and animosity between Jews and Muslims. Judaism and Islam represent two of the world’s three monotheistic faith traditions. The fight for the Holy Lands, held sacred by both religions alongside those who are Christians, has sometimes been difficult to understand amid all the political debates. Instead, this is a fight very much rooted in faith — not just politics and real estate...

The Vatican is mum on the cost of the Synod on Synodality
Vatican mum on cost of synodality synod: The Vatican has not responded to questions regarding the expense it incurred to organize and host October’s synod of bishops on synodality, a month-long meeting of more than 400 people, held in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall. But sources have confirmed to The Pillar that many of the costs associated with the meeting will be be borne by bishops’ conferences and local dioceses around the world, and that the same is expected for an October 2024 meeting that will conclude the process.

Destroying Father Rupnik's art, restoring trust and living the GospelBRISCOE: Last December, when news started to come to light about the “very highly credible” accusations of abuses committed by former Jesuit Father Marko Rupnik, I cautioned against removing his art. In the face of the outrage I saw, I advocated for a more measured response. We didn’t yet know the extent of the facts and allegations surrounding Father Rupnik. Back then, I’d tried to articulate some principles to preserve his art. I really was trying to be patient, impartial and just. And I was wrong. Knowing now the scale of Father Rupnik’s abuse...

Worse, they had lorded the law over the people. Like the priests Malachi condemns in today’s First Reading, they caused many to falter and be closed off from God. In a word, Israel’s leaders failed to be good spiritual fathers of God’s people. Moses was a humble father figure, preaching the law but also practicing it—interceding and begging God’s mercy and forgiveness of the people’s sins...

We remember a time when it was unthinkable to criticize a priest; those who did were quickly rebuked, with little opportunity for explanation. Bishops and especially the Pope were not to be questioned let alone criticized. We have now seen the sometimes-horrifying toll of unhealthy deference, of setting a class of men apart from critique or accountability.

The humiliation of another, my business
The humiliation of another, my business Neal Obstat Theological OpiningNEAL: The Gospel for today is on love of God and of neighbor together as the greatest commandment. This is important above all in determining what the ultimate purpose of all other laws is. To love neighbor is to will or otherwise choose those and only those possibilities that serve human flourishing, the genuine good of others. To love God is to choose in accord with his will, to love what he loves, desire what he desires, do what he does according to your capacity.

This Abandoned Ford Dealer Is Filled With Perfectly Preserved '80s Cars
This Abandoned Ford Dealer Is Filled With Perfectly Preserved '80s Cars: We've all seen countless videos of people rummaging through old dealerships and the dusty, rusty cars that inhabit them. However, this 1980s Ford dealership is different, because it's been stagnant in Germany for decades, and is filled with 1980s cars in brand-new condition that still look pristine.
How does a dealership remain loaded with cars in its showroom, completely preserved for four decades, without anyone either buying it or breaking in? According to the YouTube channel Auto Retro, the original owner of the dealership died many years ago and his widow kept it. Not only did she keep it without running the business or selling the cars, but she had it cleaned and maintained regularly, up until a few years ago when she was moved to a care facility. That's why it looks spotless and the cars are mostly free of dust and cobwebs.

Pope Benedict XVI: The Doctor of the Church for Our Time
Pope Benedict XVI: The Doctor of the Church for Our TimeSTAUDT: The word “doctor” means teacher, not healer, which is why we call certain saints “Doctors of the Church.” They are the great teachers who opened up the truth of the faith for their age, handing on and illuminating the timeless gift of God’s revelation anew. I am convinced that Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI will be acknowledged as a Doctor of the Church in the coming years. Even without the recognition, he truly served in this role by helping our secular age to come to know Jesus Christ more fully...

The lengthiest now connect cities on opposite sides of the globe and are upwards of 17 hours.

Taking the 'Sin' Out of Sincerity: Overcoming Scrupulosity in Religious Life - SpiritualDirection.comBEATTIE: If there is one thing aspirants to religious life are today, it is sincere. Gone are the days of “automatic vocations” that every large Catholic family was expected to provide. Now we have young people who, oftentimes despite confusion or even derision from family, want to live totally for Christ and give up things commonly seen as necessities. This desire for Christian perfection is obviously a good thing. If only more people had it, the world would be a much better place...

This Is the Meaning of Life in a Nutshell
The Meaning of Life in a Nutshell ~ The Imaginative ConservativePEARCE: Is it possible to summarize the meaning of life in a thousand words or so? Can the key questions that have preoccupied great philosophers for millennia be encapsulated in the idiomatic nutshell? The answer is yes. And the reason is that the key questions have been answered with authority by the Author of Life Himself. What is truth? Who is man? Who are we? And where are we going? The first of these questions was asked by Pontius Pilate in his native Latin: Quid est veritas?

Governments rise and fall by His permission, with no authority but that given from above. In effect, God says to every ruler what He tells King Cyrus in today’s First Reading: “I have called you ... though you knew me not.” The Lord raised up Cyrus to restore the Israelites from exile, and to rebuild Jerusalem (see Ezra 1:1–4). Throughout salvation history, God has used foreign rulers for the sake of His chosen people. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened to reveal God’s power. Invading armies were used to punish Israel’s sins...

In Gaza war, Israel v. Christian leaders may be preview of Israel v. Vatican | CruxALLEN: Wars, especially in the 21st century, are fought on multiple levels. In that standoff, the Vatican for the moment appears caught somewhere in the middle, though over time it’s likely that its position will shift in the direction of the Christian leadership...

Why does the priest put water in the wine at Mass?: As the French saying goes, “Water spoils wine, wine improves water.” But couldn’t we say that this also makes good theological sense? If water is the sign of humanity and wine that of divinity, the former is indeed called upon, through Christ’s sacrifice, to unite with the latter. St. Ireneaus said, “He who was the Son of God became the Son of man that man … might become the son of God.” The opposite — when humanity strays from its vocation as son of the Father by wasting his gifts — is sin.
