Group spiritual direction is in vogue in some circles today. Is this a good thing?

Is Group Spiritual Direction a Good Thing? - SpiritualDirection.comBARTUNEK: The essence of spiritual direction is the relationship between the spiritual director and the directee. The interaction and dialogue that happens in that relationship is deeply personal and personalized. Discerning God’s action and invitations in one’s life requires that kind of intensely personal and personalized dialogue. A group setting, with one spiritual director and a bunch of directees, would significantly change that essential dynamic...

How often do bishops hear the truth? | Catholic CultureLAWLER: After an episcopal ordination some time back, I was sitting at lunch with the newly consecrated bishop, the archbishop who had ordained him, and several other older prelates. The archbishop addressed his young colleague: Now that you’re a bishop, there are two things you never have to worry about again. You’ll never want for a good meal. And you’ll never hear the truth. He was joking. Or was he?

Ukraine moves its Christmas Day holiday in effort to "abandon the Russian heritage" - CBS News: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday signed a law moving the official Christmas Day holiday to Dec. 25 from Jan. 7, the day when the Russian Orthodox Church observes it. The explanatory note attached to the law said its goal is to "abandon the Russian heritage," including that of "imposing the celebration of Christmas" on Jan. 7. It cited Ukrainians' "relentless, successful struggle for their identity" and "the desire of all Ukrainians to live their lives with their own traditions, holidays," fueled by Russia's 17-month-old aggression against the country.

Notre Dame cathedral reconstruction project takes a big leap forward

Notre Dame cathedral reconstruction project takes a big leap forward - CBS News: Four years ago, the world looked on in horror as Paris' Notre Dame cathedral was engulfed in flames. Astonishingly, most of the church structure survived, but the massive timber roof was lost and the 19th century spire was destroyed.

This Sunday, Catholics know exactly what Jesus means by “treasure box,” “pearl” and “net”

This Sunday, Catholics Know Exactly What Treasure Box, Pearl, and Net Jesus Means | Benedictine College Media and MoreHOOPES: What Jesus says this Sunday, the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A, is literally true. We really can find a bright shining treasure box. We really do get a beautiful, white, round pearl of enormous value. The Lord really has gathered us to himself out of the cold, murky depths of darkness we were immersed in, dragging us up into the light. And the First Reading for Sunday, about Solomon, is true for us too. We each receive wisdom greater than anyone ever received before us.

As with so many stories, the violence of Boko Haram has largely dropped off people’s radar, simply because it’s been going on for so long...

I wish someone had warned me that the denouement of ‘The Miracle Club’ involves abortion

The Miracle Club (2023): Review - Roseanne T. SullivanSULLIVAN: The superficially charming portrayal of 1960s Irish Catholics dressed up in the bright fashionable colors of the era (even the doors of the Dublin row houses where they live are painted with the same bright colors, in contrast with the shabbiness inside) with some stellar actors, including Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, and Laura Linney, is rotten at its core. A lot could have been shown in this movie about the cruelty of the double standard that was in effect during those years...

Let’s look ahead to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15)

Looking ahead to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15) - AdoremusCARSTENS: Like Jesus, Mary’s Son—who is the Word in the beginning, the Second Adam at the center of salvation history, and the Bridegroom whose wedding banquet at the end lasts forever—Mary appears to us at the beginning, middle, and end of Sacred Scripture. A type of “second Eve” announced after the Fall, she gives birth to the Savior in time, and at the end of her life is assumed by God to her glorious reward in heaven. Today’s Solemnity of the Assumption celebrates her heavenly destiny—and invites us to renew our own desire to achieve this same goal.

Shark Week: Researchers Say Fatal 1640 Maryland Attack Possesses Deeper Catholic Context| National Catholic Register: A Maryland colonist, in an effort to beat the heat of a hot summer day in 1640, waded into the cooling waters of St. Mary’s River for an afternoon swim, oblivious to the presence of a lethal predator lurking nearby. “Scarcely had he touched the water” when a “huge fish” seized him, biting off “a large portion” of the man’s thigh, according to a contemporary account. He died from his wounds soon after. As shark researchers, we’ve taken a keen interest in this little-known episode, originally chronicled in Latin by one of Maryland’s earliest and most respected Jesuit missionaries.

The Curious Case of Father Marko Rupnik and the Society of Jesus

The Curious Case of Father Marko Rupnik and the Society of Jesus| National Catholic RegisterDESOUZA: There is something rather too clever about how the Society of Jesus has handled the case of the now notorious Father Marko Rupnik. They mostly concerned sexual abuse of adult women who were part of Father Rupnik’s quasi-religious community...

I'm a mess at Christian charity, but we need more of itLOPEZ: “This is no time for Christian charity.” That was what stood out among the responses to a recent nationally syndicated newspaper column I wrote about a recent controversial country-music song/video. Jason Aldean was singing about how small towns handle violence better than urban areas. He mentioned his grandfather’s gun, as a warning, among other things. I grew up in New York City, strangely enough, listening to country music, so I’m aware that Johnny Cash among others could get dark along the way...

Is the occasion of sin a sin?

Is the Occasion of Sin a Sin? - SpiritualDirection.comBARTUNEK: To sin, we must make some kind of a decision, whether clear and firm, or vague and wishy-washy. For sin to be present, our freedom must somehow be involved. This means that we are always responsible, to some extent, for our sins. If we just make a mistake, we can’t call that a sin. If I take someone else’s luggage home from the airport because it looks like mine, that’s a mistake, not a sin. But if I grab someone’s briefcase while they are not looking and disappear with it into the crowd, that’s more than a mistake...

Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, and two anointings: Why the Bible offers good reason to believe the traditional view is the right view

A Retrieval of the Traditional View of Mary Magdalene From the Fringes of Theology | Church Life Journal | University of Notre DameHARROLD: It was during a visit to the Holy Land in the summer of 2019 that I first got to know one of history’s most mysterious saints. While sitting at the base of one of the many columns in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, I found myself meditating on Saint John’s description of the first encounter between Mary Magdalene and the Risen Lord (see John 20:11–18). Realizing I was just a few feet away from the spot where this profound exchange took place brought tears to my eyes.

In modernity, the importance of flowers is perhaps found in the recognition of the sacrament's significance and flowers' unique ability to enhance every occasion.

A Pilgrimage to Honor St. Anne, the Grandmother of God

A Pilgrimage to Honor St. Anne, the Grandmother of God| National Catholic RegisterGRONDELSKI: Catholics have always had a special devotion to Sts. Anne and Joachim, in no small part because people have always had a special relationship with their grandparents. Grandparents were often the kinds of parents kids hoped they’d have: more relaxed than their own parents because less immersed in the day-to-day demands of parenting, and usually more indulgent. Grandma said “yes” to what Mommy said “no.” It’s not accidental that the feast of Sts. Anne and Joachim has, in recent years, been retooled with a focus on grandparents, a process abetted by the efforts of Pope Francis.

They brought him to a good place, and they gave him a good ‘toy’–if we call it a toy. Children have a kind of natural fascination with many things, some of them good, some of them not. How they play, what they play and with whom they play will either grow or diminish these fascinations.

Are these the End Times? Here’s what the Catechism says...

Are These the End Times? What the Catechism Says - Community in MissionPOPE: The Catholic approach to the end times is different from that in certain (but not all) Protestant circles, especially the Evangelicals, who have a strong and often vivid preoccupation with signs of the Second Coming of Christ. Many of the notions that are expressed there are either erroneous or extreme. Some of these notions are rooted in a misunderstanding of the various genres of Scripture; others are caused by reading certain Scriptures in isolation from the wider context of the whole of Scripture; and some are rooted in reading one text while disregarding others that balance it.

A spiritual father is a man convinced that Jesus Christ is the only real answer to the challenges of life

Spiritual Fathers: Prophets in a Technologized World - SpiritualDirection.comLILLES: Ashield from the competitiveness of the world, a spiritual father sows seeds of hope, encourages forgiveness and teaches how to sacrifice in a way that only a father can do. He answers doubts and reproposes the faith when it is shaken. In this way, a spiritual father helps men and women answer the call of God and step into the greatness for which they are made. In a culture overtly hostile to the faith, such fathers gather islands of humanity and are needed more than ever.

There is something new and wonderful happening in sacred architecture. Here are some examples...

There is a new movement in sacred architectureBEATTIE: When the Christian duty to share the Good News is brought up, it is usually in the context of verbalizing something. Artistic works, however, can complement words or show the way to salvation even more clearly. Indeed, when words fall short in explaining the glorious truths of the Catholic faith, visual artistry comes in quite handy. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states the following, quite notably, in the treatment of the commandment not to bear false witness

The Long March Through the Soul - The American MindMERING: Many conservatives have been caught off guard by the acceleration of the woke movement over the last few years. The onslaught feels to them, as Francis Maier notes, “like an ambush when it’s actually been a long march through the institutions.” The phrase “long march” refers to the strategic subversion of Western society by the patient installation of revolutionary ideology in our institutions of power: K-12 schools, universities, courts, media, popular culture, art, and corporations.
